They highly recommend Yamahas to their students, due to their doing everything competently, but don’t play them themselves. Most of them play vintage Selmers of course, a few of them play modern instruments by high-end boutique makers. But I work with a number of professional sax players and none of them would ever dream of playing a Chinese sax. Now I’m sure they’re improving all the time, it’s the way these things go. I often go to the NAMM Show and I’ve played a large number of the Chinese Boehm flutes… I’ve never played one that was even mediocre. The first ones that came over were so bad, she told me, that it was as if the makers didn’t have original instruments to copy, but rather were working off photographs of instruments. The band-instrument industry has been flooded in recent years by inexpensive Chinese instruments.Ī friend of mine who has made her living her whole adult life as a band instrument repair tech, and who is very accomplished and knowledgeable, calls them ISOs (Instrument-Shaped Objects) due to them looking like trumpets or clarinets or flutes or saxes on the outside, but not resembling them on the inside.
